Clackamas County honors Mountain Park Home Owners Association in Lake Oswego for extraordinary sustainability efforts
The Mountain Park Home Owners Association (HOA) was honored for its extraordinary commitment to recycling, waste prevention and other sustainable actions.
Mountain Park HOA received a BRAG Award (Business Recycling Awards Group) membership certificate and a recycled glass plaque from the Clackamas County Office of Sustainability. The award was presented by Lake Oswego Mayor Jack Hoffman at the Mountain Park HOA 42nd Annual Meeting, March 18 at 2 Jefferson Terrace in Lake Oswego.
BRAG Awards go to high achieving Clackamas County businesses – those that recycle all relevant materials regularly, prevent waste with at least six ongoing activities, consistently buy recycled products; and demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement.
“The Mountain Park HOA is doing so much, on so many fronts, it is amazing,” said Clackamas County Sustainability Analyst Susan Terry. "A complete renovation of their clubhouse and pool has enabled them to look for efficiencies and come up with new, more sustainable ideas, such as e-mailing their newsletter and recreation schedules."
The renovated pool, for example, uses variable speed motors, along with the latest ultraviolet technology to complement the chemical treatment of the water. This will enable the HOA to use fewer chemicals, and improve air and water quality.
Terry noted that the HOA also has undergone an energy audit, purchased Energy Star office equipment, and is using durable dishware and non-toxic cleaners. The HOA goes a step beyond the ordinary by recycling toner cartridges, metals, computers and electronics, and plastic buckets. Even the pre-school is getting into the act with a worm bin for composting food scraps.
The Clackamas County Recycling Partnership is a cooperative of local garbage and recycling companies; the cities of Barlow, Canby, Damascus, Gladstone, Happy Valley, Lake Oswego, Milwaukie, Molalla, Oregon City, Sandy, West Linn and Wilsonville, and Clackamas County.
